Copyright Criminals

After seeing the moving in class, Copyright Criminals and reading the documents given I believe that most types of sampling is a form of copyright infringement. If I was an artist I know that I would not be happy if someone sampled some of my work to use as his or her own. Yes, it is flattering to a certain extent but I would like to receive some credit for the hard work that I did. I think that depending on the size of the sample should determine how much the person wanting to use it is charged. Obviously the more bars used means that the artist should pay more. If it is only a small part used then they would not have to pay as much. When first looking at the movie Copyright Criminals I thought that it seemed to be okay, it was flattering to the original artist but and could potentially help the popularity of the original song. However, it seems almost ungrateful if there is no credit given to the original artist.

I would be a hypocrite if I said it is wrong and that no one should just copy someone else’s music. With the way technology is I honestly believe that there is no way to completely prevent people from breaking copyright laws. The only change that could work would be to charge people for sampling. But what happens when an artist does not admit it and no one can tell that they used someone else’s music? No matter what there will be a way around the system.

The arrangement that I would find most affective would be for someone to honestly admit that they are wanting to use someone else’s song in their own so they can pay the correct amount for it. But I still believe that that will not happen.
